With the growth of free apps, downloaded by users on unlimited bandwidth 3G packages, the operators are losing interest in content and gradually surrendering that space to the OTT players. But rather than surrendering the space they need a mind-shift to the principle that “somebody has got to pay”. If the apps are free then they need to be monetized through some other mechanism such as advertising, but despite...
Recent Comment by Martin Creaner You're right. Treating customer data as a strategic asset is an essential for future success. And if you truly treat it as a strategic asset you need to exploit this asset and be inventive in finding ways of getting over the regulatory hurdles. - which are there to stop mis-use, but also have the side-effect of stopping sensible use. But the first step is finding cost-effective and repeatable ways of turning this data into usable information.
So, you’ve heard me bleating about governments interfering with the telecommunications industry once too often, right? Well, in what may a world first, that very same industry may be instrumental in bringing down a government!
You will be forgiven for perhaps not knowing that Australia recently held a national election and that the result, almost two weeks later, is still unknown. The election resulted in a ‘hung’ parliament with neither the ruling Labor Party, headed by Australia’s first female Prime Minister...
Recent Comment by The Insider Andrew, thanks for clarifying the situation with regard to the independents. I was careful to point out that NBN was 'one of their main decision factors' and certainly not the only one, although some press outlets were playing that card rather heavily at the time. It now appears that the Coalition's faulty budget calculations have taken center stage and that Tasmanian independent, Andrew Wilkie, has since joined ranks with Labor. Considering that his state is the first to rollout the NBN and it has...

I’m back in another beautiful city this week – Vienna, Austria. First food stop was to have some tasty Vienna sausages with a special sauce. Strange as it seems, I also like to try out a country’s version of Texican food when I can. I actually had a decent helping of nachos one night, including chili. Sad thing was the chili had beans in it…a Texas sacrilege! One of the students brought up a question this week that has recurred before. He asked why a Service is not just considered a type (sub-class) of Logical...
Recent Comment by Josh Salomon Just one note that was raised in a very long thread recently by Francis Anderson - basically Products and Services have different lifecycle than Resources. Resources lifecycle relates to the SP while Service/Product relates to the customer. During fulfilment we create new instances of Products and Services while we only allocate Resources which are created in different processes and are 'only' allocated in the fulfillment process. This is just another point to think about - things are not that simple.
In an age of global free-trade agreements and open market economics I find it increasingly difficult to understand why governments want to keep ‘butting in’ 1 on the telecommunications industry. I mentioned in a recent blog that governments and the regulators they control seem to be living in a past age when all telecommunications companies were government owned monopolies.
Yes, we all know those old arguments about national security and spectrum management, but when governments start telling CSPs who they...
Recent Comment by Eric Priezkalns Great stuff! Keep saying it like it is. I've always commented that the competitors to the communications industry are the airlines. You either communicate things down a wire or you communicate things face to face. Look at what a mess the airlines are in, thanks in no small part to government meddling. We should look at their situation and shudder to think that CSPs might get pushed into making similarly ruinous decisions because of all those 'national' concerns so beloved of...
| | | Facebook fully launched its “Places” location-based service (LBS) this week for its 500 million and growing downstream base of users. What does this news mean to CSP LBS in terms of new services business growth potential? First, it uses a product design pattern that should be considered in CSP’s LBS products. Second, it is yet another web-based over-the-top (OTT) service bypassing potential CSP value beyond internet pipe connectivity. Third, it’s got a cool API for developers that CSP IT architects should note....

Hello everyone,
I'm not long back from a couple of weeks in Australia and New Zealand on a joint Training and working with a member trip. The training was in Melbourne and on the last day we had a fire drill at 4pm, as the training was scheduled to finish somewhere between 4:30 and 5, I was not too surprised when the class packed up at the sound of the alarm and said goodbye at the fire assembly point! As always in that part of the world the class were enthusiastic, taught me some bonzer Australian...
Recent Comment by Andrew Larmour Hi Andrew, Remember me from Nice? It's kind of ironic that when you travel to my city, I am flitting off to Malaysia! Oh well, next time. I for one would be interested in joining and participating in an Australasian / Oceanic / Asia Pacific (whatever flies) chapter of the TMF. Ooroo (Ozzie for godbye) Andrew ;-)
Funny how some news stories are viewed differently. This week’s big IT headline was that Intel had bought McAfee for a massive $7.68 billion, but depending where you read about the story took on multiple personas.
There is no doubt that the acquisition underlines Intel’s bet on “hardware-enhanced security” and demonstrates that that security is a necessary component as the tech company’s reach expands to handle billions of new Internet-ready devices, such as mobile phones and computers, TVs, cars, medical...

NFC, or near field communications technology, should be a raging success outside of Korea and Japan, but it simply is not. Despite efforts by the GSMA to get the ball rolling with CSPs worldwide and the finance and transport industries agreeing on the profound benefits of having multiple payment methods ensconced in mobile devices.
It’s like world’s colliding. The traditional payment handlers such as banks and credit card issuers have the credit and distribution channels sown up as well as the all important...

| | | In last week’s blog, we looked at the term “Service Broker” for the communications industry. Two contexts were highlighted: 1) the network service broker, and 2) services brokerage business models. Today, we examine the same term in an emerging context of cloud computing. Similar to the defined network service broker, the cloud service broker is beginning to take an early form. In Gartner’s recent press release and report last month, Gartner identified three forms of cloud service brokers.

CSPs facing the challenge of home market saturation, increased competition and lower margins have a number of options to take up in order to improve shareholder value. Cutting costs brings the fastest results both to bottom line and share price, but it’s not always the best long term path.
Aggressive and cash-rich CSPs are looking more and more at entering other markets, whether as a new player or by acquisition. Nothing new there, but the results for early movers have been mixed and what may work well in...
