Running the world’s first commercial 4G mobile network has given TeliaSonera a head start and a few head-aches as well. 4G users have changed their mobile surfing habits simply as a result of gaining access to quicker mobile broadband, 10 times quicker to be exact.
As might be expected, the people who jumped on the 4G bandwagon first were those already interested in technology. According to a survey conducted by the operator 100 days into its LTE experience, over 90 percent of users had upgraded from an already...

| | | With the June 24 TM Forum webinar and Team Action Week sessions (interest groups, SDF next phase), we’ve announced a direction and priority scope for the TM Forum’s Enabling New Services Initiative. Work remains to be done in tuning it and our execution plans, but it feels great to me to now be started. The initiative includes a dual focus: product trading between businesses (e.g., part of B2B space), and management of new enabling services. On July 13, industry visionary Alan Quayle blogged about some of the...

| | | Back from one of the most successful and best attended Team Action Weeks in years! So, why would that make me crabby (ill-tempered)? It wasn’t me that was crabby; it was all the sumptuous delights I ate that consisted of crab. In Baltimore, being one of the crab capitals of the world, just about every restaurant and pub has their own variation of crab cakes. But it doesn’t end there – fried soft-shelled crabs, crab and cheese dip, crab legs, crabs in the shell to be cracked and eaten, various types of crab soup…and...

While CSPs worldwide grapple with how to monetize their services it appears that many ‘over the top’ or OTT players continue to grow their mobile revenues. Amazon.com is the latest to announce record results with generated revenues of $1 billion from mobile purchases during the last 12 months.
CEO Jeff Bezos revealed this during the Amazon's Q2 earnings release, and stressed the importance of mobile phones and tablet computers in the company's future plans but he did not mention the role CSPs are playing...

| | | By now, the terms "commodity players," "bit pipe" and "dumb pipe" with reference to traditional communications service providers (CSPs) have become tired and overused. CSPs know full well that the writing is on the wall – and has been for years – and if they don't continuously reinvent themselves, they will get left behind as new upstart players start to fill their role. Nowhere is this more evident than with cloud services, a phenomenon that's much more than a flash in...

No matter how clever communications technology becomes I’m still not convinced it cannot adequately replace face-to-face meetings. We are very much a matrix organization in the TM Forum with people located all over the world and mainly working from home. We communicate regularly by email, Skype, GoToMeeting and conference calls and, for the most part, the communications is effective. But there’s nothing that beats getting together in one place to ‘chew the fat’ and interact personally.
This is not an indictment...

Google received little more than a slap on the wrist from Australian authorities following the furore after is was ‘caught’ and admitted capturing Wi-Fi data and personal information during its Street View image and mapping exercises. The ‘incident,' which generated heated debate in the Australian parliament and is being duplicated in at least six other countries, raises far-reaching questions for governments, regulators and private enterprise on just how far private information can be collected, used and even compromised....

This week at the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference 2010, Microsoft Corp. was highlighting market opportunities for hosting and communications service providers as adoption of cloud services among small and midsize business (SMBs) continues to rise. Microsoft is offering to help service providers take advantage of those opportunities through its software, services and programs that enable them to become trusted advisors and full-service IT providers to businesses.
That all sounds grand but Microsoft may...
Recent Comment by Rohit Raghav Tony Thanks for sharing the information and insights. Your point of creating differentiated offerings is very interesting. Some thoughts around this topic. CSPs bring extra value to the Cloud ecosystem because of their presence in the same market place as their enterprise customers. CSPs are more likely to better understand the client’s business context vis-à-vis other cloud service providers. This should, at least theoretically, make CSPs more competent at delivering innovative & differentiated...
