    Network Infrastructure in Customer Premises

Is there a generic term that describes Network Infrastructure owned by the provider but is located in a customer's premise?  I do not want to use the term CPE as this could also mean customer owned equipment such as a server or facsimile etc.  I am referring to equipment such as a basement switch which forms part of the network but is remotely sited from the exchange (central office).

    Hi Ralph,

I worked for a North American wireline service provider. Based on my experience as far as LEC's are concerned they call this equipment as NIU (Network Interface Unit) and are placed at the customer premises. NIU is placed at the end of the local loop network and acts as a demarcation point between customer and service provider.

    Hope that makes sense.

    Regards,

    Patrick
