As more companies are implementing TM Forum Open APIs, it is becoming vital to get a clear and independent way to understand and show the usage, compliance and certification of the APIs in vendor product portfolios and in communication service providers’ (CSPs’) systems.
To help achieve this, TM Forum have launched the Vendor Adoption Assessment Report (VAAR) and CSP Adoption Assessment Report (CAAR) as simple repositories to provide knowledge of the up-take of the Open APIs. They use information provided by members to create sets of reports showing the state of the market:

Report format
The diagram below* shows how typical output from the Adoption Assessment Reports will look, representing a total picture of the overall API portfolio. *Data shown is for illustration purposes only.
The surveys run quarterly, producing a series of charts and reports which allow TM Forum members to understand the trends and levels of Open API adoption in the market place. Various levels of reports using anonymized member data will be available, presenting the data from the survey with no bias or commentary, just facts. In addition, participants in the survey have the option to purchase personalized individual reports with restricted viewing to help benchmark implementation against the (anonymized) market.
What do the quadrants of the chart mean?
- Experimenting
Completed some testing of Open APIs but have not fully incorporated them into products and services; may have experimented with Open APIs in a sandbox environment, in TM Forum’s Open API Lab or as part of a TM Forum Catalyst proof-of-concept project
- Broad ambition
Has an ambitious commitment to support Open APIs across the whole scope of their products or systems, but is early in the process of deploying them
- Focused, targeted deployment
Implemented a small number of Open APIs across portfolio; maturity is advanced but the number of APIs used only covers a small area of total product portfolio
- Widespread mature deployment
Implemented several Open APIs in a significant percentage of the product portfolio and products are widely deployed in CSPs’ environments
