A combination of new technologies and new ways in which to leverage these technologies have changed the way in which IT solutions are constructed, delivered, and operated in a fundamental way. Almost every common mature practice that has been the foundation of the ICT industry for the past three decades has been challenged. The underlying principles remain, but the practices and business process implementations look radically different.
A new wave of companies, unencumbered by the baggage of previous models, operate using these modern techniques, giving them significant competitive advantage over traditional IT and CT organizations.
This represents a challenge to large enterprises, such as carriers, as they seek to adapt to a new role as Digital Service Provider and compete with these new challengers.
For CT organizations, they must also transform their legacy networks and NetOps practices to adapt to the new world of SDN, NFV, and digital service delivery.
This new model of operations is commonly referred to as DevOps, and as will be explained in this report, represents a combination of technologies, practices and culture that create a holistic new model of how ICT should be executed.
This report is intended as a guide to carriers and DSPs as to the nature of DevOps, and its impact on incumbent IT and network groups in a carrier setting. It forms part of the TM Forum Zero-touch Orchestration, Operations, and Management (ZOOM) initiative.
