The telecoms industry is in a catch-22: New digital architectures, processes and work practices such as Agile software development, DevOps, cloud and microservices can help communications service providers (CSPs) address the pressure they’re under to cut costs and find new sources of revenue, but organizational silos and cultural issues like hierarchies, red tape and aversion to risk are standing in the way.
In the latest TM Forum Digital Transformation Tracker on culture, 75% of CSP respondents believe culture and organisation issues are a very serious or moderately serious challenge to digital transformation. The biggest challenges they identified is that they are too hierarchical with 50% of respondents acknowledging it. Until CSPs flatten their organizations and devolve decision-making, they will be unable to take risks and innovate. Indeed less than 15% of CSP respondents believe that their companies are agile or innovative enough to do this.
